This photography tip is all about your cameras light meter. Your camera should have a screen similiar to the one below and a similiar graduated scale as shown.
Your cameras light meter is important for correct exposure of your photos. The middle of the scale indicates correct exposure as highlighted by the little bar underneath. The - and + signs indicate under or over exposure. Generally when exposing your photo you want the bar in the middle.
The photo below indicates under exposure.
The photo below indicates over exposure.
If you are in auto mode and your photos are darker or lighter than expected, you may have exposure compensation active. Find this in your cameras menu and reset it to the middle.
